Elijah & Shelly, speaks from experience as they discuss their journey with infertility, their faith in God, and the connection between God and medicine.
Their story is one that was once too painful to talk about. The book provides an emotional, heartfelt story of their twelve-year journey with infertility, discussing their views individually and as a couple. After experiencing infertility and going through the process of testing, seeking advice, dealing with the costs, the lack of emotional support, the time-consuming visits, and various levels of stress, they now have a greater appreciation for parenthood as well as for the importance of ensuring their story is told with hopes of helping as many people as possible fulfill their dreams of becoming parents.
According to the 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth, CDC, 1 in 8 couples either have trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. In addition 7.4 million women have received some form of infertility services. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) attributes one-third of infertility cases to women, one-third to men, and one-third being caused by a combination of problems between both partners.
Unfortunately, there are various barriers, many being financial, that has prevented couples from pursing assisted reproductive technology (ART). Elijah and Shelly’s goal is to assist others by engaging them in a conversation about the issue, followed by education and continued support throughout the process. They have benefited greatly from speaking with other couples and encouraging them to seek medical advice and not to be afraid of modern technology.
